I also venture to propose a substantial

increase in the pay of the Chinese Sergeant-Major Chan Sik- -choung. It was proposed to me that I should try to got him a house allowance, but I think it is best not to start house allowance at all for Chinese, and prefer to recommend an in-

-crease of pay. He has 25 years' excellent service and is an

invaluable man in the contingent, in fact one of the best Chinese of any sort I have ever had dealings with. His present pay is $30 a month only. He is worth a lot more than that and I recommend that his pay be increased to $45 a month, or at least $40, though I probably should not recommend such high pay for his successor should he leave us. However I hope that point will not arise for some time, if my suggestion is ap-

-proved.
